Bone density scanning, also called dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DXA or DEXA) or bone densitometry, is an enhanced form of x-ray technology that is used to measure bone loss. DEXA is today's established standard for measuring bone mineral density (BMD).
Northwest HealthCare provides osteoporosis testing close to home for north St. Louis County residents. Our DEXA scanner measures bone mineral density of the hip and spine -- areas of the body that are most susceptible to fractures due to the disease.
"The testing is fast and painless, and requires no invasive procedures," says Walt DeLaney, DEXA coordinator. "With this equipment, we can not only diagnose osteoporosis, but also continue to monitor the progress of therapies that treat it." DeLaney notes that within the last several years a number of treatment options have been developed for osteoporosis, which primarily affects post-menopausal women.
A physician referral is required for the bone density testing, which is covered by Medicare and most insurance plans. The patient's referring physician receives a complete report, including images of the DEXA scan.
